Notary & Community Services

Notary Services

Lawrence Public Library offers limited, in-person notary services to members of the public. A Lawrence Public Library card and Lawrence residency are not required. Please contact our Font Desk at 978-620-3600 before visiting to confirm that a commissioned Staff Notary will be available.

Before Your Visit

• Contact the Library to confirm notary availability. • Do not sign the document before meeting with the Staff Notary. • Complete all required sections of the document, except the signature. • All individuals who must sign the document must be present. • Bring an acceptable, current government-issued photo ID. • Bring the entire document, including all pages.

Identification Requirements

Every person signing a document must present a current government-issued photo ID. The name on the identification should match the name appearing on the document.

Witnesses

The Library does not provide witnesses. If witnesses are required, the person requesting the notarization must bring them. Library patrons and staff may not be asked to serve as witnesses.

Service Limitations

Staff Notaries cannot provide legal advice, explain documents, select the type of notarization required, or help prepare or complete documents. The person requesting service must understand the document and know which notarial act is required.

When Service May Be Declined

A Staff Notary may decline service when identification is insufficient, the document is incomplete, the signer does not appear to understand the document, the signer is being pressured, or the request raises concerns about legality, authenticity, or safety.
